Miners' Organizations

This album contains items from miners' organizations other than the United Mine Workers of America, such as miners' unions in other countries, miners' benevolent associations, workmen's clubs, etc.

This first grouping of items are brass, copper and aluminum membership tags from various British mining unions prior to the NUM. The holes allow the miner to sew the button onto their clothing to show they are union members and have paid their dues.

Two china plates from the Pelton Colliery. Pelton Fell was a colliery village partly in Pelton Parish and partly in Chester-le-Street Parish, County Durham.The Pelton Colliery Institute was erected by the colliery owners in 1889, it contained reading and billiard rooms, a lecture hall, and was supported by subscriptions of one penny per fortnight from the miners and other mine employees.
